
| Altus Air Force Base, Oklahoma is the home
of the 97th Air Mobility Wing (AETC) and the C-17 and KC-135 strategic
airlift and refueling training school. The primary mission is to provide
quality training to produce the finest combat-ready aircrew members ensuring
rapid global mobility for American forces. On average about 3000 students
are in training annually. The base has approximately 1000 permanent party
military members and 1,100 civilians assigned.
Altus AFB is within the corporate city limits of Altus, which is located in the heart of Oklahoma's Great Plains Country and is the county seat of Jackson County. The community lies 139 miles southwest of Oklahoma City and is accessible north to south by U.S. Highway 283 and Oklahoma State Highway 44 and east to west by U.S. Highway 62.
